Death*Roderic died on 27 February 1936 at age 77; He died having not produced any heirs (and nor had any of his siblings).  His widow Jane, left Snaith Hall (built by William Shearburn) to her brother-in-law Harry Shearburn.  However, Harry died on the 24 May 1938 and added a codicil to his will leaving Snaith Hall to his cousin (once removed) Thomas Otho Shearburn White. However, by the time my grandfather inheried the house [ Andrew Stainer reports ] on Jane's death the economic situation meant that the house was more of a liability than an asset.  While it had 600 acres it didn't even have electiricty.  My father had spent quite a lot of the war years there living with Aunt Jane (as he was sent to school in York) and recalls sitting in splendid isolation in the dinning room, being waited upon by the cook in a room lit entirely by candles, while Aunt Jane kept to herself in her rooms upstairs.  My grandfather must have felt compelled to change his surname to Shearburn - a bit of mouthful with Shearburn as a middle name already!  We always thought it was a condition of the Will, but having got a copy of Harry Shearburn's will there is no such requirement in it.8
Burial*He was buried on 2 March 1936 at Busbridge, Godalming, Surrey.
Probate*His estate was granted probate on 11 May 1936 at London; SHEARBURN Roderick Bryant of Snaith Hall Snaith Yorkshire died 27 February 1936.

Father*Henry Howard b. 9 Apr 1713

Biography*Edward Charles Howard, born May 28, 1774, the youngest son of the Duke of Norfolk, died September 27, 1816 was a British chemist, who has also been described as "the first chemical engineer of any eminence".

In 1800 he was awarded the Copley medal of the Royal Society of London for his work on mercury. He discovered mercury fulminate a powerful primary explosive.

In 1813 he invented a method of refining sugar which involved boiling the cane juice not in an open kettle, but in a closed vessel heated by steam and held under partial vacuum. At reduced pressure, water boils at a lower temperature, and this development both saved fuel and reduced the amount of sugar lost through caramelization.
The invention, known as Howard's vacuum pan, is still in use.

He was also interested in the composition of meteorites especially in "natural iron" ones. He found that many contained an alloy of nickel and iron which was not found on Earth, and thus may have fallen from the sky. A type of meteorite is known as Howardite.1

Robert Briant died in 1803, leaving an only daughter, Ann Briant, and she, by will of 1807, devised her Farm and Lands called Scotland and the Hundred Acres to her cousin, Robert Briant; therein presumably including the three closes. At any rate, a William Briant was owner of the "Church Lidden (No.564), as well as Scotland &c., at the time of the Tithe apportionment (1842) and James Mann held both about twenty years later.2

Ann seems to have inherited the property as part of the Real Estate of her father Robert Briant under his will of 9 November 1803 [Probate ? Court of ? 2 March 1804].
